The World Bank on Thursday approved a grant and credit in 20 million U.S. dollars for health and education projects in the Republic of Burkina Faso.
The amount consists of 15 million dollars in additional grants for the Health Sector Support and Multisectoral AIDS project and a5-million-dollar credit for the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering project.
The original Health Sector Support and Multisectoral AIDS project of 47 million dollars was approved in April 2006.
The additional funding will help the government purchase adequate doses of vaccines to mitigate any recurrent outbreaks of meningitis, and accelerate essential health and nutrition activities at community levels in response to a worsening malnutrition problem which has reached crisis levels and is holding back the country’s efforts towards the Millennium Development Goals.
Of the funding, 10 million dollars are to strengthen the partnership between the public and the private sectors in providing much needed support to grassroots communities tackling malnutrition and, as such, assist in enhancing the capacity of civil society to fully participate in the provision of basic health services to the poor.
The International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering(2iE) aims to increase the number of highly skilled professionals in the areas of water, energy, environment and infrastructure engineering, vital fields for Africa’s development.
By training in Africa highly qualified young engineers and technicians from a large number of Francophone and Anglophone African countries, 2iE will contribute to developing African competitiveness and expertise in the growing sectors of water, environment, energy and infrastructure, and provide the indispensable human resources to carry out important water and sanitation related project investment.
