United Way Has New Goals For Education

The president of the United Way of America announced plans this week to steer money over the next 10 years toward programs related to education, income and health care.

That’s already being done at the United Way of Central Oklahoma, the local organization’s president said Friday from Washington, where he was meeting with elected officials from Oklahoma.

“I find it interesting that the United Way of America decided to set those goals,” Bob Spinks said. “We’ve been working on those in Oklahoma City for a long, long time.”

United Way of America president Brian Gallagher announced the national initiative during the organization’s annual conference Wednesday in Baltimore. The announcement coincides with a United Way report showing a decline in health, education and the finances of working families.

“I’m glad they are finally getting on the bandwagon,” Spinks said of the national goals. “We’ve tried for a long time to be on the cutting edge of initiatives that our citizens feel are important.”
